Ferrari 812 GTS, the Cavallino V12 is back with a spider model after fifty years

Some loves do not end: they make immense turns, and then they return.

Indivisible, indissoluble, inseparable loves.

There is no need to present the timeless Antonello Venditti, but it is incredible how the text of the well-known song "Amici mai" by the Roman singer fits perfectly to the occasion: a few days ago, after 50 years, Ferrari officially presented the Ferrari 812 GTS, the uncovered version of the fantastic 812 Superfast.

This is the new spider model equipped with the legendary V12 of the Cavallino, and the announcement has literally inflamed the minds of enthusiasts and professionals, a sign that a Ferrari V12 on a spider model has left only excellent memories in the environment. despite the half century that separates the 812 GTS from the 365 GTS4 of 1969 (the last Ferrari spider prototype equipped with a 12-cylinder), better known perhaps as the Daytona Spider, which allowed the Maranello manufacturer to celebrate the double win two years earlier in Daytona with the triumphal parade arrival of the 330 official P4s and the private 412 P.

The 812 GTS cannot but thrill road car lovers: it strongly evokes the almost century-old tradition of Ferrari, above all because the open version of the 812 Superfast is linked to a very long history, marked by iconic models such as the 166 MM of 1948. , a car that allowed the Italian company to win the Mille Miglia and the 24 Hours of Le Mans the following year.

From 1969 to 2019 there was no shortage of spider models: just think of the 550 Barchetta Pininfarina of 2000, the Superamerica of 2005, the SA Aperta of 2010 and the F60 America of 2014, but all the models listed were limited edition.

Innovating and improving is a target that Maranello's engineers have always set themselves, but this time Ferrari has aimed really big, starting with the V12 engine, a monster capable of giving 800 hp (at 8.500 rpm) to the 812 GTS, which consequently becomes the most powerful spider on the market, equipped among other things with a hard top, the roof capable of folding in just 14 seconds, even with the car in motion (up to 45 km/h) .

The engine is the same that Ferrari had introduced with the 812 Superfast, with a torque that reaches 718 Nm for frightening acceleration, albeit with progressive and linear delivery at all revs, thanks to the direct injection system at 350 bar.

This also leads to an improvement in the atomization of the fuel jet, reducing particulate matter. The displacement goes from 6.2 to 6.5 liters, thanks to a device made on the variable geometry intake ducts; it is a solution taken directly from the aspirated engines of Formula One.

The fascination of the Ferrari V12 on an open car can bewitch anyone, but the 812 GTS also strikes you for its aesthetic lines, created to respect the standards of Maranello and the Centro Stile led by Flavio Manzoni.

It is not easy to describe the elegance of the 812 GTS, but the best way to convey the idea is to enhance the perfect balance between sportiness and elegance, thanks to the elongated front bonnet capable of holding all the cavalry.

As with the 812 Superfast, the design of the side mainly serves an optical purpose, reducing the size of the rear; combined with the muscular fenders, all these elements together allow the 812 GTS to present itself with a powerful, aggressive appearance, thus following the philosophy already seen with the non-convertible version, but unlike the latter, the rear has been slightly modified: it can be seen by observing the two fins under which the folded roof is housed. Another particularly interesting novelty is the new multi-spoke forged rim with a sculpted design.

Guaranteeing the same performance as the coupé, while maintaining maximum comfort when the roof is open, requires major measures also from the aerodynamic point of view.

Thus, between redesigned surfaces and triplane diffuser profiles, in Maranello they managed to obtain the necessary efficiency load, facilitated in terms of resistance by the air vents on the rear sides.

The Ferrari 812 Superfast is equipped with all the latest generation control systems, such as the electric power steering (EPS), the Ferrari Side Slip Control (SSC) and the Virtual Short Pass (PCV), and then switches to the two alert systems that they help the driver understand the limit of grip (FPP) and excess oversteer (FPO).

The Spider version of the 812 manages to guarantee excellent total driveability values, despite the 75 kg more additional weight compared to the coupé, thus keeping the phenomenal performance of the car intact.

Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in less than three seconds, up to 200 km/h in 8.3 seconds, while the maximum speed remains fixed at 340 km/h, are just some of the values that allow us to understand what the maximum potential of the machine is.
